How to Replace a Door Knob
Make sure the latch-bolt is set correctly with the size of door you have. The best way to know is if the latch cam driver (the hole I'm pointing to) is centered in the cylinder hole ( the big hole in the door itself ).

Carefully slide the front handle into place . . . threading the locking pin through the latch cam driver.

Check the backside and make sure everything is lining up correctly.

Holding the front handle with one hand and lining up the back handle prior to sliding it in place is important. Three things must line up here, the center pin slot and the two opposing screw holes with the stems on the front handle.

I find it much easier to hand tighten the two mounting screws. Using your fingers gives you a better feel for whether or not you are hitting the threads of the stems. Never tighten one side down all the way before you start with the other side. Go back and forth until they are both somewhat snug and then tighten them down with the correct sized screwdriver.
