Usually the latch will come with a couple different types of plates to choose from. Obviously you'll want to match the existing plate with the new one. If you are installing a door knob in a new door I would recommend the plate with the squared off corners . . . it's much easier to counter-sink into the wood if the new door is not pre-drilled or pre-cut for a lock-set. Anyway, different door manufacturers use different designs . . . so find the one that fits best!

Using the screws that come with the new latch I installed the new latch with the curved part facing the door jamb. (The curved part of the latch must be facing the jamb if you want to be able to close the door without turning the handle . . . otherwise the flat side of the latch will hit the strike plate and stop the door from shutting all the way) .
